Week 5 reading assignment is Ernest Hemingway, "Hills Like White Elephants". It is a about a man who wants a girl to get rid of her baby, by having an abortion. She does not really want to have an abortion, but the man tells her, their life will go back to being happy if she goes through with the procedure. He tells her, he will love her regardless of what she decides. This week questions are does she stay in her relationship with the man ,and when have you made a important choice to stay in a relationship or leave a relationship -- OR -- stay or leave a difficult situation?
Yes, I believe the girl stays in the relationship, because she loves the man more than she loves does herself. On reason I believe she will stay is when she says, "I don't care about me". When she said that, she is telling us, that she will put his feelings and happiness above hers. Another thing that she says that leaves me to believe she will stay with him is when she tells him that she knows things, and can tell that it is not right to have the abortion, but she still going to go through with it to please him. That shows that she is going always do any and everything to please the man, regardless if it is not want she wants. She had given up caring about her feelings to keep him satisfied. So no, I do not see her leaving the relationship. Twenty-five years ago, on a hot summer day in early July, after the man I thought I would spend the rest of my life with, called me out my name for the third time in less than five minutes, I knew it was time for me to leave this volatile relationship, before one of us ends up dead and the other one in jail. I have been in this relationship for over ten years and it had been nothing put psychical and verbal abuse on both are parts: him cussing me out, me throwing things or hitting him. But that day as I sat there silently listening to him calling me out my name over and over again trying to get a reaction out of me, I knew I was tired of living this life. As he walk toward the chair I was sitting in, I stood and pushed him in the chest and with tears coming down my face I scream "I hate you". He called me another name and next thing I know I had slap him in the face. Now normal he will just grab my hands, but this time he swung back and that when all hell broke loose and at the end of the day

Week 4 blog is about life choices. Is it ever okay to tell a lie? We listen to a podcast What You Don't Know (Lulu Wang). In the podcast Lulu Wang describes how her 80 year old grandmother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, and the doctor told them, she only had three months to live. The family decided it was best to let the grandmother believe she was healthy, and Lulu Wang did not agree with the decision. We was giving two questions to answer. Did you agree with the family's choice to deceive Wang's grandmother, and when have you made an important choice to tell someone a difficult truth or you made an important choice to tell a lie that had a major impact on you and/or someone else?
Do I agree with the family's choice to deceive Wang's grandmother? Yes, I agree the family was right not to inform the grandmother of her condition. In there Chinese culture it is believed that mental and emotional health are completely linked to physical health. The family believed that the grandmother was to old, and not strong enough to handle the news about her health, so she would make herself sicker and succumb to the cancer early than the three months the doctors predicted. By not telling her, the family believed she would live longer, and her last day would be happier without the worrying and fear of dying. So yes, if you are lying to someone you know can not handle the trust it is okay. Why would you want to cause them unnecessarily grief and pain. In the end, not revealing to the grandmother that she had cancer, might had saved her life, because three years later she was stay alive. When have I made an important choice to tell someone a difficult truth or I made an important choice to tell a lie that had a major impact on me and/or someone else? I have never been in a situation that I had to make a choice to tell a lie or be honest as not to cause unnecessary pain to someone else. But if I had too, I would. I believe in the saying " ignorant is bliss". I would never cause someone pain just to ease my conscience. My Name is Margaret (Maya Angelou)
Week #3 of my English course, and the assignment is to write about life choices. The professor ask us to read a short story by Poet Maya Angelou title "My Name is Margaret", and explain is you agree with Margaret's choice to break the casserole dish and two green glass cups, and when have you made an important choice to either resist or not resist oppression, challenge the status quo, or refuse to obey an authority figure. Do I agree with Margaret's choice to break the casserole dish and two green glass cups? Yes I do. The breaking of the casserole dish and two green glass cups was a why for Margaret to get fired from her job, and not have her mother mad at her for quitting. Why did she want to get fired? Margaret felt that she was insulted and disrespected one day at work where she was a maid working in Mrs. Viola Cullman kitchen. She was serving Mrs. Cullman and her white friends when she heard one of the ladies tell her boss that she needs to shorten Margaret name to Mary because it was to long to pronounce. Margaret never thought her boss would change her name to Mary because it was a well known fact that you should never called a negro anything but their given name out of years of being called abusive & insulting names. So the minute she heard Mrs.. Cullman call her Mary she became instantly sick and know that she could never work for her anymore. But her dilemma was that she knew that her mother would not be pleased with her if she quit her job, so she had to think of a way to be terminated. Margaret knew that the casserole dish and two green glass cups was Mrs. Viola Cullman most prized possessions, so she knew that accidentally breaking them would get her mission accomplish. When have you made an important choice to either resist or not resist oppression, challenge the status quo, or refuse to obey an authority figure. I love football and especially the Philadelphia Eagle's, but this season I decide to boycott the NFL behind the, "Bend the Knee" "That a Stand" movement. Most of my family members serves or had served in the Armed Services. Some of my family thought I was being disrespectful not to salute the American flag, while other family members understood why I was doing it. But my biggest struggle to stay true to the boycott was that my team was finally winning, and going to the Super Bowl. The boycott did not allow me to purchase any NFL items or give them any Nelson ratings. Not watching the Super bowl or buying the new tee shirts with Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl Champions has been one of the hardest things I had too do. But as much as I want that pretty shirt with the Super Bowl ring on it, I will continue my boycott of the NFL until it is called off. Myra Andrews
